A Rise in the Exports of Citrus and other produce from Egypt to the World

Advancements in Egypt's Agriculture Industry

Egypt’s agricultural sector is making significant strides, not only in production but also in ensuring that its produce meets the highest international quality and safety standards. With a growing emphasis on food safety and compliance, the country has established state-of-the-art testing laboratories to monitor agricultural exports. These labs are equipped with advanced technology to test for pesticide residues, contaminants, and other quality parameters, ensuring that Egyptian produce adheres to the stringent requirements of global markets. This focus on quality assurance has enhanced Egypt’s reputation as a reliable supplier of premium agricultural goods.

In addition to testing facilities, Egypt has implemented rigorous certification systems to align with international standards such as GlobalG.A.P., ISO 22000, and HACCP. These certifications are now a prerequisite for many exporters, ensuring traceability and compliance throughout the supply chain. By prioritizing food safety and sustainability, Egypt is not only increasing its competitiveness in global markets but also building trust with international buyers who demand high-quality, certified produce. This commitment to quality is a cornerstone of the country’s strategy to expand its agricultural exports.

Government Initiatives and Investments

The Egyptian government is heavily investing in the agricultural sector, with plans to allocate approximately EGP 534 billion over the medium-term plan. This includes significant investments in land reclamation projects aimed at expanding arable land. Notable projects include the New Delta initiative and the Future of Egypt project, which together aim to reclaim millions of feddans for agricultural use. Such initiatives are expected to bolster agricultural production significantly, targeting an increase to EGP 2.43 trillion by 2024.

Export Growth and Key Produce

Egypt's agricultural exports have witnessed remarkable growth, with over 6.9 million tons exported in 2024 alone, generating approximately USD 4.04 billion in revenue. This represents a substantial increase from previous years, highlighting Egypt's expanding presence in global markets.

Top Exported Products

  1. Citrus Fruits: Leading exports with 2.27 million tons in 2024.

  2. Potatoes: Exports reached 973,130 tons, gaining popularity particularly in European markets.

  3. Onions: Contributed 281,785 tons to export totals.

  4. Other notable exports include beans, grapes, mangoes, and pomegranates, showcasing Egypt's diverse agricultural output.

Market Potential

The increasing demand for Egyptian produce is underscored by its status as the world's largest exporter of oranges and frozen strawberries. The expansion of export destinations—now reaching over 160 countries—has been facilitated by government efforts to improve product quality and meet international standards. Furthermore, the private sector plays a crucial role, accounting for about 44% of total agricultural investments, indicating robust interest from investors seeking opportunities in this growing market.

Egypt's agriculture industry is on the cusp of a major transformation fueled by technological advancements and strategic government initiatives. As the country enhances its production capabilities and expands its export portfolio, it presents a compelling opportunity for international markets looking for high-quality produce. With continued investment and innovation, Egypt is poised to solidify its position as a key player in global agriculture.
